Chimes
Trinity Cathedral has one of the three sets of chimes extant in Pittsburgh. Trinity’s second building had four bells dated in 1864. Five more were added in 1871 by Meneely/Wvlt, with the third Trinity building, and the last bell was added in 1874 by Meneely/Wvlt. The bells were remounted in a new frame with the “lastest chime action” (electric) in 1910, and were re-electrified in 1955.

Trinity’s M. P. Moller Pipe Organ
1914, 1954, 1968, Console 1990, West 1991
Specifications
In 1893, the Columbian Exposition Organ built by Henry Pilcher was the first “all new” instrument for the third Trinity building built in 1871-1872. This instrument replaced an organ built by Jardine before 1869 for the second Trinity Church building. The Pilcher contained 37 stops. In 1913-1914 the organ was completely rebuilt by M.P. Moller, Inc., with Frederick C. Mayery, organist of the chapel at West Point, as consultant. Many pipes of the exposition organ were incorporated in the new design. In 1925 after Alfred Hamer became organist, a new console was installed.

In 1954, M.P. Moller again rebuilt the organ utilizing pipework from both the 1893 and 1914 organs, but including new pipework to keep the organ in line with tonal progress of the 1950s.

In 1967, a tragic fire damaged Trinity Cathedral. The organ was once again rebuilt by the M.P. Moller organ company, making many tonal changes but utilizing many of the pipes from the previous organ. The 8′ State Trumpet was also added in the West Gallery.

In 1990, a new four-manual console was built for Trinity, and in 1991, the West division was added to the instrument (dedicated to Canon Alfred Hamer).

In 2004, Trinity Cathedral began the expensive process of re-leathering the instrument and making major repairs to the wind chests and other structural problems.

Specifications
The organ encompasses seven divisions (including pedal) playable on a four manual console. There are 16 levels of memory, each level containing 20 general pistons controlling the entire organ; ten divisional pistons controlling the Great, Swell, Choir, and Pedal; eight divisional pistons controlling the Positiv and Solo; and six divisional pistons controlling the West. There are also two arrangements of the manuals, controlled by a reversible transfer piston: Trinity arrangement (I-Great, II-Swell, III-Choir, IV-Solo) and English arrangement (I-Choir, II-Great, III-Swell, IV-Solo). The Positiv and West divisions are floating in both arrangements.
