Cathedral Walk-In Ministry
Service to the last, the least and the lost is part of the institutional DNA of Trinity Cathedral. Since the recession of the early 1980s, members of the parish have learned not merely to tolerate the presence of the transient community but to endeavor to reach out to its members in Christian love and fellowship. That this is a ministry to which all those who claim to follow Jesus are called is undeniable; that it is an easy ministry is less clear; but what all who participate can testify is that it has very real rewards.
The Walk-In Minstry is an opportunity for members of the parish and the wider community to connect on a one-to-one basis with the hungry, the homeless, the isolated and the destitute. Part of a wider ecumenical partnership between the five churches in Downtown Pittsburgh, Walk-In represents a frontline service to any and all who have need of it, offering two or three days worth of food, toiletries, various articles of clothing that we have in stock, and referrals to other city agencies.
The ministry is hosted by each of the five churches in turn over the course of a five-week period and Trinity Cathedral is open for business from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 1:00 to 3:00. A client list is maintained and all users of the system are asked to produce some form of picture identification. A typical volunteer serves as part of a two-person team, covering the two daily shifts on a particular day (the option of covering a single two-hour shift is also available). All that is asked of them is a readiness to serve and a willingness to listen.
